Digital Literacy in 4th Grade: A Safe Path for Parents
Children today grow up in a world where computers, tablets, mobile phones, games, apps and online communities are a natural part of everyday life. By 4th grade, many children already use digital tools at school, at home and with friends.
For many parents, the digital world can feel difficult to navigate. New games and services appear all the time, and children often learn to use them quickly. At the same time, parents encounter terms such as platform, app, account, profile, cloud, server and artificial intelligence. This can create the impression that you need to be a technology expert to keep up.
You do not.
Digital literacy does not mean that children or parents need to know every program and technology. It means learning to navigate a digital world safely, critically, creatively and responsibly. It also means understanding something about what the technology is, who is behind it, and what happens to the information we give it.
For children around 4th grade, this is a good time to begin learning these things more consciously.
The terms are often used interchangeably, but they mean different things.
A computer, tablet or phone is a physical device. This is also called hardware. It is the machine the child uses.
The device contains software. Software consists of programs that tell the machine what to do. A word processor, a browser and a computer game are examples of software.
An app is also software. The word is short for application, in other words, a program. We mainly use the word app for programs on phones and tablets, although in practice the distinction between apps and traditional computer programs has become less clear.
A game is a digital product in which the user actively participates. Minecraft, for example, is a game where a child can explore, build and solve problems. It can be played alone or with other people.
A platform is somewhat different. It is a digital environment that brings together different activities, functions or people. Roblox is not simply one game. It is a platform where users can find and play many different experiences, communicate with others and create content themselves.
A communication service can likewise be a platform. Users may be able to send messages, talk, share images or files and participate in groups.
Understanding the difference matters because a child is not necessarily just “playing a game”. At the same time, the child may be on a platform with profiles, chat, purchases, advertising, unfamiliar users and data collection.
The term digital product is broad. A game can be a product. An app can be a product. A program for drawing, writing or learning mathematics can also be a product.
Some products are purchased once. Others require a subscription. Some are free but contain advertising or in-app purchases. Others can be used for free because the company behind the product earns money in other ways.
So “free” does not always mean that there is no price.
As a parent, you can start by asking a few simple questions together with your child: Who made this app? Why did they make it? Does it cost anything? Does it contain advertising? Can you buy things inside it? Do you have to create an account? What information do you have to provide? Can other people contact the child?
Questions like these are an important part of digital literacy.
Discussions about children and technology can easily become discussions about how many hours children are allowed to spend in front of a screen. Time is of course relevant, but screen time alone tells us very little about what a child is actually doing.
There is a major difference between watching short videos for an hour and spending an hour programming a small game, drawing, writing a story, making music or building an advanced project with friends.
Parents can therefore benefit from asking both “how long?” and “what are you doing?”
Digital literacy means being able to use technology while also understanding it. Children should gradually learn to find information, evaluate sources, communicate appropriately, protect personal information and understand that people on the internet are not necessarily who they claim to be.
But children should also discover that a computer is not only a device for consuming content. It is a tool for creating things.
An important part of digital literacy is giving children opportunities to create things themselves.
In Scratch, for example, a child can program a character to move, react to a key press or have a conversation with another character. The child may not yet be learning traditional programming, but discovers an important principle: the computer does what a person has instructed it to do.
In Minecraft, children can build structures, plan projects and collaborate. They can create illustrations in a drawing program. With sound and video, they can tell stories. In a word processor, they can write their own newspaper or book.
This changes the child’s relationship with technology. The child is no longer only a user of other people’s digital products, but begins to understand that digital products are things people construct.
That is an important insight.
For children, the distinction between the physical and digital worlds is often less clear than it is for adults. A classmate you play with in the evening is still a classmate. A conflict in a chat can continue in the school playground the next morning.
Digital communities can be very positive. Children can collaborate, stay in touch, help one another and share interests.
But digital communities also require social rules.
How should we write to other people? What should a child do if someone is excluded? Is it acceptable to take a picture of someone else and send it on? What should a child do if a stranger writes to them? What counts as private information? When should an adult be involved?
These are digital questions, but to a large extent they are also about ordinary behaviour, responsibility and respect for others.
A child in 4th grade does not need to understand complicated data protection legislation. But a child can begin to understand that information has value.
Names, addresses, phone numbers, school details, pictures, passwords and information about where someone is should not be shared without careful thought.
The same applies to pictures of other people.
A simple rule can be that the child asks an adult if an app or a person online requests information that the child is unsure about.
Parents can also show the child how to check privacy settings, see who can contact a profile, and review the permissions granted to an app.
In this way, safety becomes something families learn together, rather than simply a list of prohibitions.
There is also a broader question that children can gradually begin to understand.
Digital environments are created by someone.
When children meet on a platform, the company behind the platform largely determines the framework. The company decides on the functions, the rules and often what information is collected.
This does not mean that platforms are bad. They can give children wonderful opportunities for learning, creativity and community. But over time, children should learn that digital services are not neutral natural phenomena. They are products developed by people and organisations for particular purposes.
This is the beginning of a more mature understanding of the digital world.
Artificial intelligence makes this issue even more important.
AI can help explain a difficult word, suggest ideas for a story, practise a foreign language or help a child understand a mathematics problem.
But AI can also be wrong.
An AI system can present an answer very convincingly even when the information is incorrect or incomplete. This makes source criticism even more important.
Children should gradually learn the difference between receiving help and handing the work over to the machine.
If AI writes the entire story, the child may end up with an impressive text without necessarily learning how to write. If, instead, the child asks AI for ideas for three characters and then writes the story independently, the technology is being used in a different way.
The interesting question is therefore not only “Are you allowed to use AI?” It is also “How did you use AI, and what did you do yourself?”
One of the biggest misconceptions about digital literacy is that adults need to know more about technology than children do.
They do not.
The most important role of parents is not to know every button. It is to ask questions, set boundaries and take an interest in what the child is doing.
For example, ask your child to show you a favourite game. Ask what you are supposed to do, why it is fun, who the child plays with, and whether you can create anything yourself.
The child gets an opportunity to be the one who explains. At the same time, the adult gains insight into the child’s digital world.
This often creates a better conversation than simply asking, “How long have you been sitting in front of that screen?”
You do not need to create a major digital education project at home.
Choose one tool and explore it together. It could be Scratch, Minecraft or a simple drawing program. Let the child show you something, or try creating a small project together.
Talk about the services the child already uses. Look at account and privacy settings together. Find out who the child can communicate with.
Make clear agreements about purchases, contact with other people, sharing pictures and using personal information.
Make sure the child knows that they can always come to an adult if something strange, uncomfortable or confusing happens online.
The aim is not surveillance. The aim is for the child gradually to learn how to make good decisions independently.
Digital literacy should not be a separate topic that is brought out only once a year.
Technology can be integrated naturally into language classes, mathematics, science, foreign languages and creative subjects. Children can program, investigate sources, write digital stories, work with images and sound, or discuss the difference between human-created and AI-generated texts.
There are also questions that parents can usefully discuss with one another.
When do children start using particular platforms? How should class chats be handled? What happens if some children do not have access to the same technology? How should conflicts that begin online and continue at school be addressed?
A shared understanding is often more effective than ten different sets of rules in ten different homes.
For children in 4th grade, digital literacy can begin with a few basic principles:
Learn the difference between a computer, a program, an app, a game and a platform.
Find out who is behind the digital products your child uses.
Talk about personal information, passwords, pictures and contact with strangers.
Do not ask only about screen time. Ask what your child is doing on the screen.
Let your child create something digitally, not only consume content.
Talk about good behaviour online in the same way as good behaviour elsewhere.
Teach your child that information online and answers from AI can be wrong.
Regularly explore a digital tool together.
Make sure your child knows when to ask an adult for help.
Children should not be protected from all technology. They should learn to understand and manage it.
This requires both freedom and boundaries.
A child should be able to experiment, play, communicate, program and create. At the same time, the child should learn that digital actions have consequences, personal information must be protected, other people must be treated properly, and information must be assessed critically.
Parents do not need to know about the next popular app in advance. The most important thing is to remain curious and keep the conversation open.
Ask your child: What are you doing? Who are you doing it with? Who made the program you are using? What can it do? What does the company gain from you using it? Can you create something yourself with it? And what do you do if something seems wrong?
Then digital literacy does not become a battle between children and adults over screens. It becomes an ongoing conversation about learning how to navigate the digital part of the world.
